Week 8: Christmas Special

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Welcome to a special edition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! As a gift to all my readers I've decided to add a keeper league recommendation for this post, it will be included at the end of the article. For those of you who haven't familiarized yourself with the rules and concept of the article, they are quite simple; 5 players, 1 for each NBA position, all must be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues. I'd also like to remind you all that your questions and comments are welcomed, and I look forward to answering all of them as quickly and effectively as I can.

The Holidays are upon us and Christmas is near but that doesn't mean that our fantasy teams don't deserve our undivided attention. It's time we gave our squads some gifts off the waiver wire that will help us win that fantasy title. Let's see who caught my eye this week!

Point Guard

Isaiah Thomas (PG) Yahoo Ownership 46%

Fitting that we would start our Christmas Special with the biblical name Isaiah. Unfortunately for most owners Isaiah Thomas did not start the year as most people (including I) had planned. But his early season woes can not be placed on him, but rather the ineptitude and incompetence of Keith Smart, Sacramento's head coach. The Kings are 9-18 and a large part of the blame can be put on Smart for removing Thomas from the starting lineup in favor off journeyman PG Aaron Brooks. Brooks, unlike Isaiah is a horrendous defender and is consistently lit up by the bigger bodied point guards. Thomas on the other hand, showed us last year what he was capable of doing when he received starting minutes. In 37 starts last year Thomas put up top 80 fantasy numbers, averaging 14.8 ppg, 5.4 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.6 3PT, while shooting 47.7% from the field, 40.6% beyond the arc, and 84.1% from the charity stripe. Outstanding numbers to say the least, but unfortuntaley from day one of this season, Smart has not given his superior PG the minutes he deserves and it has shown with his average minutes per game plummeting to 19:30 this season (with a couple of DNP-CD during the span). Evidently with such little playing time Thomas' stock has dropped considerably and has been putting up plus 200 value, yet it seems we have a happy ending to this tragic story. Over the past 2 weeks it seems that Smart is finally starting to learn that Brooks is not the answer and Thomas gives his team the best chance to win night in and night out. Thomas over the past two weeks has started to see 20+ minutes per game and in return has put up top 120 fantasy value, still not fantastic but definitely on the right track. Personally I believe that slowly but surely Thomas will begin to regian those minutes from inferior PG Aaron Brooks, and when he does the party will finally start. Maybe Smart gets fired and the process will happen a little quicker, but for now it's a slow but gradual pace. If you are an Aaron Brooks owner the time is especially now to cut the cord on that experiment and return to Thomas. Owners would be wise to jump on now before someone else grabs Thomas sooner and enjoys the top 80 numbers he can provide.

Shannon Brown is firing on all cylinders

It seems that there is finally some stability in Alvin Gentry's rotation, and Shannon Brown has benefited largely from it. Although Brown has been instilled as the starting SG since mid November, he hasn't started seeing 30+ until the month of December. Now that Gentry has finally cut out ineffective players like Wes Johnson and Michael Beasely entirely out of his rotation, plenty of minutes have freed up for Brown and he has certainly taken advantege of them. When you take a look at the numbers Brown has put up over the past 11 games, it's a shocker that he is still owned so very little in Yahoo leagues. In the month of December so far Brown has averaged a solid 33:30 mpg while putting up 15.0 ppg, 1.4 3PT, and 1.6 steals, while shooting 42.4% from the floor and 91.7% from the charity stripe, good enough for top 80 fantasy value. I mean there isn't much more of an argument I need to make, the numbers are there and he has produced them over an extended period of time. As long as Brown continues to receive starters' minutes I have no issue claiming that he will finish inside the top 90 in fantasy value. Owners would be wise to grab Brown immediately in favour of underwhelming shooting guards such as Randy Foye and Dorell Wright. Consider Brown a slightly lesser version of Marcus Thornton and enjoy the top 90 fantasy production from the Suns' scorer.

Small Forward

Matt Barnes (SF) Yahoo Ownership 24%

Let's go with a bit of a deeper league player and talk about Matt Barnes. The bad boy veteran has always been known as a solid defender and has had his share of suspensions and technical fouls. After making an intercity move from the Lakers to the Clippers, Barnes has seemed to have found some offensive game which is leading to solid fantasy production. Coming into the new year, Barnes is currently ranked as 61st best fantasy player this season so far, impressive to say the least. With the Clippers, Barnes has averaged a career high 25:30 mpg, 10.3 ppg, and 1.2 steals, while also averaging a solid 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 3PT. Along with the career high production Barnes is also shooting above his career average from the field (49.8%) and from the line (77.8%). It would be obvious to assume that regression will plague Barnes as the season resumes but I argue that his numbers will continue to hold due to three key reasons; Barnes is seeing career high minutes which has allowed for the increase in his fantasy production, he is playing in a system that encourages spread out offensive production not isolation, and he is playing alongside an elite PG in Chris Paul, who makes everyone around him better. In my opinion as long as Barnes remains a Clipper and he is seeing 25+ minutes there is no reason to think he can't put up top 70 fantasy production. Consider Barnes a slightly less version of Kawhi Leonard and add him in favour of other SF such as Tony Allen and Michael Beasley. If you need some cheap 3's and steals then Barnes is your man, go out and get him now.

Power Forward


Gustavo Ayon (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 9%

Time to start talking about some big men, and Gustavo Ayon is certainly a big man. Standing at 6'10" tall and weighing in at 250 pounds the Mexican sophomore has finally been given his time to shine. When Big Baby Davis went down with a serious shoulder injury many were wondering who would benefit from the freed up minutes, would there be a time share of some sort? Over the past 2 games since Davis went down, it's clear that there is no time share, and that Ayon is now the new starting PF to own in Orlando. Ayon played 27 minutes off the bench in the first game, then started and played 37 minutes in the second game, clearly he is ahead of Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O'Quinn in the rotation. In his last game as a starter Ayon put up numbers that will he will more or less continue to produce for as long as Davis is out. Ayon dropped 9 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists while shooting 50% from the field and the charity stripe. Ayon will also continue to be a a solid option for blocks and will help you a bit in steals as long as he is starting for the Magic. His free throw and turnover numbers will hurt you a bit, but if your looking for a solid rebounder who can block and score a little than Ayon is your man. A fantastic short term rental option I have no problem in grabbing Ayon in favour of power forwards such as Ersan Ilyasova and Kris Humphries. Go out and grab Ayon now before Davis returns from his injury (he is scheduled to be out up to 4 to 6 weeks) and enjoy the solid numbers from the Mexican native.

Centre

Amir Johnson (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 15%

Another week, another Raptor I'm fortunate enough to recommend. Last week Ed Davis was the flavour of the week, this time we have Amir Johnson. With severe injuries to both Andrea Bargnani and now to rookie centre Jonas Valanciunas frontcourt minutes have freed up in Toronto, and it has benefited Johnson immensely.  Over the past two weeks (the length of time Bargnani has been out) Johnson has put up top 40 fantasy production averaging 8.0 ppg, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks while shooting 56.3% from the field and an incredible 92.3% from the charity stripe. The fantastic part about all this, is that he has put up these number while averaging just under 25:00 mpg, imagine what he can do with even more minutes. When Valanciunas went down early with his finger injury last game Johnson stepped right in and was given a fantastic 34:46 minutes, a trend that will surely continue with the Raptors thin frontcourt and Johnson's effective defense. Due to Johnson awesome percentages and solid peripheral stats he will soon become a hot commodity on everyone's waiver wire, jump on him now and beat the wave. Owners would be wise to pick up Johnson in favor of other centres such as Emeka Okafor and Elton Brand. Pick up Johnson now and enjoy the high level production from the underrated Raptor centre.

Keeper League Special

Andre Drummond (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 21%


It's the time of the year unfortunately when many owners need to take a realistic look at their rosters and see where they stand, do they have a shot at a championship or even the playoffs? If the answer is no, then it's time for keeper league owners to rock and reload and grab some players that can have an impact on their roster next year and for many more seasons to come. My favourite keeper league option by far has to be Detroit Pistons forward Andre Drummond. Selected in the first round with the 9th overall pick (one pick after Toronto reached for Terrence Ross, the story of the Raptors franchise) from Connecticut, Drummond was a high profile player coming out of college but was believed by many analysts to be more of a project than an instant force in the NBA. Well Drummond has proved many wrong and in limited time this year has shown that he is a star in the making and an absolute beast on the glass and an elite option for blocks. His free throw shooting reminds a major project (40%) but he has surprised many with his high FG% (55.9%) and his solid basketball sense. The only thing that is holding back Drummond from being an immediate fantasy impact is the coaching staff in Detroit who chooses to give Jason Maxiell minutes over him. If and when Drummond starts to receive higher minutes there is no doubt in my mind that he will become and elite frontcourt option for fantasy squads. Perhaps it might not happen this year (I do hope that it does) but there is no doubt in my mind that by next season Drummond will be starting alongside teammate Greg Monroe and the two will be dominating plenty of NBA frontcourts for years to come. Go out and grab Drummond now if you are in deeper leagues or keeper leagues and enjoy the immense amount of potential he provides.

Week 7: Beyond the Arc

What's up everyone and welcome to another fantastic edition of "Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups"! The rules are simple, I write about five players (one for every starting position) and they all must be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues. I love all your basketball questions so I encourage all of you to continue posting in the comment section of the article.

It seems to me that the past couple of weeks there have been some solid pickups but not many players that can have strong season long impacts. It's time we went beyond the arc and try to strike for some gold. Let's see who caught my eye this week!

Point Guard


Jarrett Jack (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 37%

He's back! As much as I like putting out new names every week for recommendation, I just couldn't wait any longer to write about Jack for the second time. It's truly stunning that Jack is still owned under 50% in Yahoo leagues, even though he has averaged top 100 fantasy production over the past 30 days. When I first recommended J.J. in this article things started off great and he was receiving playing time and putting up serviceable numbers for his owners, yet around mid November Jack went through a bit of a shooting slump and his minutes began to decline so perhaps I was a little overzealous on him. However in the month of December both Jack and the Warriors have been on fire, the team going 7-2 and Jack averaging top 50 fantasy production...coincidence? I don't think so. Over the past 15 days Jack has averaged 29:30 mpg, 13.3 ppg, 1.4 3PT, 5.3 assists, and 1.1 steals, while shooting 50% from the field and 91.7% from the charity stripe. Again, like I said before Jack won't put up stand out numbers in a single category, but his ability to put up solid numbers across the board with good percentages needs to be respected by fantasy managers. The key for Jack to continue to put up these solid numbers lies not in his playing ability but rather in Mark Jackson's distribution of playing time. With players like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson situated ahead of Jack on the depth charts, some nights it becomes difficult for Mark Jackson to deploy Jack unless he goes to a three guard set, meaning that some nights Jack just won't see the court as much. So far in December, Jackson has had no problem in giving minutes to him but fantasy owners should keep in mind that Jack will have some downs, but they will most certainly not outweigh his ups. Owners would be smart to acquire the services of Jack in favour of mediocre guards such as Mario Chalmers, and Andre Miller. Pick up Jack now before it's too late, and enjoy the top 100 fantasy production from the veteran guard.

Shooting Guard


Marco Belinelli (SG) Yahoo Ownership 29%

Viva Italia! Last week we went French with Kevin Seraphin, this week's international flavour comes from the golden boot. As a former Raptor I'm familiar with Marco Belinelli's game, and let me tell you this guy can shoot the three ball. Coming into this season Belinelli was buried on the depth chart with the likes of Rip Hamilton, Kirk Hinrich, and Nate Robinson positioned ahead of him. Due to Rip Hamilton's recent injury (something that we could have all predicted would happen) Belinelli has now found himself atop the depth chart and has started the past 9 games. Now with the starting opportunity Belinelli has done everything I imagined Rip Hamilton would do this season and more. He has become the primary scorer for the Bulls, averaging an outstanding 17.1 ppg and has turned major profits for fantasy owners by averaging an elite 2.1 3PT made per game and 1.4 steals per game. His numbers will probably regress a little due to the career high in shooting percentage and free throw percentage, but there's no denying the uptick in usage rate for Belinelli. Unlike Hamilton, Belinelli is an elite shooter beyond the arc and it's the main factor why he has averaged top 40 fantasy production since gaining the starting role. Owners in a pinch for some cheap steals and 3's would be wise to acquire the services of Belinelli immediately, before some of his injured teammates return. Owners would be wise to grab Belinelli in favour of players such as Mike Dunleavy and Wilson Chandler (can't believe those guys are still owned). Hurry up and grab the Italian now before the usage rate drops and his elite production vanishes.

Small Forward


Kyle Korver (SG,SF) Yahoo Ownership 34%

Let's stick to the beyond the arc trend and talk about one of the veteran three point specialists in the game, Ashton Kutcher....I mean Kyle Korver.  Many people forget but in his early day's in Philadelphia, Korver was actually a solid fantasy assest, averaging double digits and playing around 30 mpg. Alas over the past 5 season while splitting time between Utah and Chicago, Korver has become a fantasy enigma due to his lack of playing time. Now in his first season with Atlanta, Korver has finally received valuable minutes (averaging just over 27 mpg) and is producing at a solid rate for fantasy owners. So far Korver is averaging 10.3 ppg, an elite 2.5 3PT made per game, and 1.1 steals. Numbers that are most certainly useful for owners who are struggling in the steals and three's department. You may be wondering how in the world a player who is averaging top 60 fantasy production this season can possible be owned under less than 40%, and to be honest I'm not sure why that number is so low. My best guess would be that Korver struggled with a back injury for the late part of November, and it forced him to sit out 5 straight games. Since returning from injury the Hawks have handled Korver with kid gloves and haven't played him over 23 mpg, but fear not this number will rise. Owners would be wise to go out and grab Korver immediately before someone else does, because he will be a hot pickup once he starts producing like he did earlier this season. Grab Korver in favour of players such as Harrison Barnes and Michael Beasley, and enjoy the elite 3-point shooting for the remainder of the season.

Power Forward


Ed Davis (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 33%

I can't believe it, I can finally recommend one of my beloved Raptors on my blog and actually feel confident that they will do well this season. Davis, unlike the Raptors, has a solid outlook for the remainder of the season with the recent elbow injury to underwhelming power forward Andrea Bargnani. Both the Raptors management and coaching staff have been foolish for holding down Davis for this long, the kid can ball and will most certainly help this team win more games. Unfortunately since his rookie season Davis has barely sniffed the court, but during his limited playing time he has shown potential to a be fantasy stud if given the minutes to do so. Now with Bargs gone Davis has started the last three games and most certainly has not disappointed. As a starter Davis has averaged top 50 fantasy production, putting up 13.3 ppg, 8.0 reb, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blk, while shooting 74.2% from the field and 87.5% from the charity stripe. Clearly Davis has some impressive stuff to offer owners and can most certainly be a difference maker for the remainder of the season, especially if Bargnani is traded (a likely possibility). As long as the incompetent coaching and managing staff continue to give Davis the playing time he deserves (something that isn't guaranteed)  than I have no problem claiming that Davis will be a top 100 fantasy commodity come years end. Owners would be wise to cut ties with players such as Brandon Bass and Kris Humphries in favor of Davis. Pick up the third year veteran now and enjoy the solid fantasy production from the Raptor forward.

Tiago Splitter (C) Yahoo Ownership 14%

Let's go with some more international flavour and talk a little bit about Tiago Splitter, the big man from Blumenau, Brazil. I've been a fan of Tiago's game since his rookie season in the NBA, unfortunately my opinion doesn't translate into playing time. Tiago plays for the fantasy menace Gregg Popovich, who I think enjoys making fantasy owner's lives miserable. Recently though, Mr. Popovich has seen the light and has given his big man some serious playing time over the past 2 games averaging just over 28 minutes in both contests and starting the most recent one. When given over 28 mpg Spiltter has averaged a solid 14.3 ppg, 8.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.0 blocks, while shooting 56.7% from the field. These are very impressive numbers and most certainly can be useful for fantasy owners. Splitter isn't all perfect and does have some warts to his game, shown with his poor free throw shooting (career 64% shooter) and high turnover rate (1.8 turnovers as a starter). So you may be wondering why now has Popovich decided to start giving his big man more playing time, and I believe it's due to two main reasons; defense and durability. Over the course of the season Splitter has shown an improvement in his defense with his increase in rebounds and blocks and it was showcased in his last start in which he held Kevin Garnett to 6 rebounds and 13 points. While his defense has improved, the veteran big men around Spiltter are not getting any younger and Popovich is starting to find more opportunities to rest his star Tim Duncan (the Miami incident was proof of this). Owners would be wise to pick up Splitter now and see if the playing time increase continues, because if he proceeds to get more run owners may be looking at a top 100 fantasy producer.

Week 6: December Blues

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! You know the rules, five players, five positions, all are owned under 50%. If you have any trade, pickups, or team rating questions or concerns feel free to ask them in the comment section. I'm always happy to help! Also I'd like to apologize for the multi week absence of the blog. Unfortunately being a student during exam period, time is limited and the blog tends to suffer but now that the holidays have come I've got plenty of time on my hands.

Now just because most of the hot pickups are gone and you feel like you're stuck in the december blues, remember there is always value to be found on the wire. Now let's see who caught my eye this week!


Point Guard

Jeremy Pargo (PG) Yahoo Ownership 13%

People may say I am a little late in recommending Jeremy Pargo and that the bandwagon has left too long ago to jump on, unfortunately unlike many fantasy writers I enjoy taking the wait and see approach rather than speculate and declare definitive statements. After Pargo shocked the basketball world by dropping 28 points with his first start, every fantasy writer including your mother was telling you to spend all your money and drop whoever you can in order to add Pargo.  Now that the storm has past and we have a greater sample size on what Pargo can do for us,  I think it's clear that we have a solid short term PG option, rather than the second coming of Magic Johnson. Although I wasn't very bullish on Pargo's original valued stock, I agree that his ownership level is too low and he has proven that he can provide late round value while starting for the Cavs. In the past 8 games filing in for Kyrie Irving, Pargo has averaged a very respectable 15.1 ppg, 4.8 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.8 3PT during 33.6 mpg. Certainly numbers that stand out but are hindered unfortunately by the 3.0 turnovers he averages, and 38.9 FG%, and 70.8 FT%. So in conclusion Pargo is a mixed bag of goods, he provides the volume stats but with poor percentages. As long as Kyrie Irving is out (and reports say he is still a few week's away from returning to the court) I see no reason that Pargo won't continue to provide late round value, and perhaps can improve on his percentages a little. Owners would be wise to seek out the services of Pargo in favour of name's such as Isaiah Thomas and Mario Chalmers, but to temper expectations, and not break the bank for the short term fix.

Kyle Singler (SG,SF) Yahoo Ownership 20%

I must say I didn't think the day would come where I would be recommending Kyle Singler as a solid top 100 fantasy option in fantasy basketball. As much as I enjoyed watching him play for Duke and winning a national championship, I was skeptical in thinking that his skill set would translate into NBA success. As a Blue Devil, Kyle was a stat sheet filler putting up great value in both volume and percentage stats. In his nation championship winning season (his junior year) Singler averaged 17.7 ppg, 7.0 rbg, 1.0 steals,  and 2.4 assists while shooting 79.8% from the line and 41.5% from the field. Now after being selected in the second round by the Pistons and taking a year sabbatical from the NBA to play a season for Real Madrid, Singler fell off the fantasy map. Kyle began the season on the bench but since taking over the starting SG spot for the struggling Rodney Stuckey, he has done nothing but impress. In his 11 starts this season Singler has averaged a solid 12.0 ppg, 4.2 rbg, 1.3 3PT, and 0.7 steals, while shooting 50.5% from the field, 45.2 % from 3PT land (this will surely drop though), and 76.8 from the FT line. Singler is showing us that he can produce his across the board stat filling numbers with good percentages in the NBA. Although his rate of production is not like his college day's, as a starter Singler has been putting up top 70 value for his fantasy owner's, something that cannot be ignored. Owners were be wise to acquire the services of Singler in favour of overrated commodities such as Dorell Wright and Mike Dunleavy. Pick up the Singler now and enjoy the high level production for as long as he continues to receive  30+ minutes in the Detroit lineup.

Kawhi Leonard (SG,SF) Yahoo Ownership 45%

There isn't much of a case to be made as to why Leonard is owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues. His recovery from right knee tendinitis is almost complete and there is specualtion he will return to the court this coming week. The number's speak for themselves, prior to the injury Kawhi was putting up top 50 fantasy value and was well on his way to a sophomore break out season. Prior to being shut down Leonard was averaging and incredible 2.0 steals per game, while also putting up 10.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.0 3PT, while shooting 49.3% from the field, and 94.1% from the FT line. Starting all 9 game he has played in this season, Leonard had carved himself a valuable roll in the San Antonio offense and averaged a respectable 28.4 mpg that has allowed him to put up solid number's for fantasy owners. Managers would be wise to to scout their waiver wire's and see if an impatient owner has foolishly cut bait with the former San Diego State player, and add his services immediately before it's too late. Owners should acquire the services of Kawhi Leonard in favour of underachieving commodities such as Ersan Ilyasova, and Eric Gordon. Grab Leonard now in anticipation of his near return and enjoy the top 50 fantasy value for the remainder of the season.

Markieff Morris (PF) Yahoo Ownership 12%

I want to make one thing clear. I despise what Alvin Gentry has done to the Suns and our fantasy team's. Benching Gortat and Dragic for the likes of Jermaine O'Neal and Telfair is ridiculous and stupid and has shown with their current 7-15 record (while losing 7 in a row). While I believe (and hope) that Gentry will soon lose his job and things will return back to normal in Phoenix, as fantasy players we still have to analyze who Gentry is giving these extra minutes too. The answer to this question seems to be Markieff Morris. The former Kansas Jayhawk and current sophomore has found himself in the starting lineup replacing Michael Beasley, and is carving himself an every night 30 minute role. Morris has started the past 11 games and in the last three games has averaged more than 30 minute's per game. As a starter Morris has shown us that he is able to put up versatile numbers like he did in his Kansas days by averaging 11.2 ppg, 5.6 reb, 1.0 3PT (shooting 45 percent from beyond the arc), and 0.6 blk. While putting up solid stats Morris has been able to keep his percentages respectable by shooting 83.3 from the charity stripe and 49.5 from the field. As long as Morris isn't subjected to the idiotic wrath of Gentry I can see those number's grow and blossom with the increase in playing time. Perhaps not an immediate pickup in standard leagues those in keeper leagues should be very intrigued with the potential Morris provides now and for the future. Currently I would drop players such as Michael Beasley and Tristan Thompson in favour of Morris. Kevin Seraphin (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 30%

Vive la France! Seraphin is the first official frenchman to crack the blog and rightly so. There is no excuse for Seraphin to be owned in less than half of Yahoo leagues, the early season slump and slow start is long gone and Seraphin has become a double double machine while receiving starter minutes. Perhaps it's because he plays for the Wizards, or maybe because he is coming off the bench now that has caused fantasy owners to ignore the services of Seraphin. In the past 9 games Seraphin has averaged over 28 minutes per game while both starting and coming off the bench, and has surpassed Emeka Okafor in the rotation and has held off the never healthy Nene. So far in the month of December, Seraphin has averaged an incredible 16.3 ppg, 7.3 rbs, and 1.3 blk, while shooting 60% from the field. While the shooting percentage will not remain so high, most of these numbers are not far off Seraphin's season average. He will hurt you in FT% (a career 67% shooter) but is a solid scorer and a great source of cheap blocks. Savy owners would be wise to claim the services of the frenchman now in favour of overrated commodities such as Spencer Hawes and Sam Dalembert. Think of Seraphin as a poor man's version of Kevin Garnett and enjoy the top 120 production for the remainder of the season.

Week 3: The Veteran Presence-Deep League Special

Hello everyone and welcome to another adition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! The rules are plain and simple, I recommend five players (one for each starting NBA position) and they have to be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues. Now time for the real material, let's see who caught my eye this week in the world of basketball.

Point Guard

Alexey Shved (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 18%

You may be wondering why I would begin my "Veteran Presence" article with a 23 year old rookie point guard from Russia. The fact is Alexey Shved made his pro basketball debut in Russia for CSKA Moscow at age 17!!!, showing the amount of pedigree and talent he possesses. After playing well overseas and leading the Russian national team to a bronze medal at the London Olympic games, Shved caught the eye of many NBA scouts and was finally signed by the Timberwolves this offseason. Coming into the year, this international man of mystery really had no role in the lineup, with the signings of Chase Budinger, Brandon Roy and fellow Russia teammate Andrei Kirilenko, the Timberwolves made it imperative to have a deep front court with the absence of Ricky Rubio. But things don't always go according to plan and Minnesota has been decimated by injuries  losing Roy and Budigner to knee surgeries, and J.J. Barea to a foot injury. Now playing time has seemingly opened up for the Russian and he has not disappointed so far in the limited minutes he has played. Due to his length (he measures in a 6 ft 6 in) Shved has put up some impressive defensive numbers when given 30+ minutes. In the past 9 games, when given 30+ minutes Alexey has averaged a very impressive 16.2   points, 1.2 blocks, 4.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.6 three pointer. Although his shooting percentage (.383%) and turnover rate (2.8) shows that he still has a lot of work to do in getting adjusted with the NBA speed and style, Shved has clearly shown to fantasy owners that when given time to run, he can produce at an impressive rate. Although the sample size is small, and the presence of Ridnour (not like he stays healthy for long) and the future return of Rubio may hinder Shveds ability to see floor time, I truly believe that his multi category potential has the ability to greatly assist fantasy owners now and in the future. Managers  would be wise to grab Shved now before it's too late in favour of players such as Jared Dudley and Mario Chalmers, he simply has much more upside.

Daniel "Boobie" Gibson (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 12%

It's hard to believe but good old Boobie is playing his 7th season with the Cavs this year, and still at the ripe age of 26 years old. It's not a secret as to what Gibson calling card is, the man can flat out shoot the three ball. With a career 41.6 three point percentage it's obvious that Gibson is consistently a threat to hurt teams from downtown. Now the issue with Gibson is A) He never can stay healthy (only once has played more than 70 games in a season) and B) He rarely gets enough playing time to have a serious fantasy impact. Well with the unfortunate injury to superstar point guard Kyrie Irving it seems that Gibson's path to playing time has taken a turn for the better. With not many options to choose from in the front court, Byron Scott will probably be forced to deploy Gibson more than he has in the beginning of the season. When staying healthy and given court time, Gibson has averaged as a starter 11.6 ppg, 0.8 steals, and an impressive 2.3 3pt made per game. Although it's no guarantee that Gibson will become a starter with the 4 week absence of Irving I suspect that his minutes will climb to around 28 mpg, much better than his current 21 mpg and more than enough time for him to create and impact for owners. Managers who are in a pinch for some cheap three pointers, steals, and solid free throw percentages should look no further than Daniel Gibson as a short term loan. Think of him as a slightly better version of Kyle Korver and Jared Dudley and enjoy the short but fun ride while it lasts.

Small Forward

Tayshaun Prince (SF,PF) Yahoo Ownership 30%

Now we've finally reached a real veteran in both age and career. The 31 year old Prince is now and 11 year NBA veteran and if there is one word I could use to describe his game, it would be "consistent". His career averages speak for themselves; 32 mpg, 12.9 ppg, 4.7 rebounds, 46% FG, and 0.7 3pt mpg, Tayshaun is the definition of deep league multi category fantasy player. He rarely puts up overwhelming numbers but never lets hurts you with terrible performances. The former Kansas product skinny figure and long reach translates into his ability to produce solid amounts across the defensive category board, from blocks (0.6) to steals (0.6). Although he no longer plays on the "Fab Five Pistons" Prince still is able to put up decent fantasy value across the board, averaging top 125 fantasy production. Yes the 2012 Pistons are a bad team, and some fans have been calling for a youth movement since the squad is not competing for anything significant, but Prince is at no risk to loose playing time simply because he is one of the only competent defensive players this team has. When you add up the fact that he is currently shooting a career best 55% from three point land its easy to see why owners can find Prince useful for their fantasy squads. Managers in need of consistent production across the board should look no further than Prince and would be wise to drop him in favour of underwhelming players such as Wilson Chandler and Trevor Ariza. Think of Prince as a slightly less version of Alonzo Gee and enjoy the consistent output.

Power Forward

Jason Thompson (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 44%

Let's get a little younger and little more upside and talk about the fantasy value Jason Thompson has surprisingly provided. I say surprisingly because coming into this season, no one had any idea how the playing time would pan out with the Kings' starting rotation.  With the presence of Demarcus Cousins and Chuck Hayes and the additions of rookie Thomas Robinson and James Johnson, it seemed impossible for Thompson to find anything above 25 minutes per game in this crowded back court. Yet as much as a carousel ride Keith Smart's starting rotation has become, shockingly Thompson has been one of the few players receiving consistent 30 minute playing time. After the first 10 games into the season Thompson has averaged 10.8 ppg, 7.2 rebounds, a career high 1.3 blocks, and in free throw percentage 76.5%. Now Thompson has put up these top 80 fantasy numbers while averaging a solid 30.11 minutes per game, something that is essential for him to take the next step from a fringe top 140 fantasy player, to a solid top 100 fantasy player. The former 12th overall pick has seen himself carve out a substantial and safe role in the Kings lineup, while Demarcus Cousins will always be locked into  the starting centre role, Thompson has so far been able to hold off the veteren (but offensively inept) Chuck Hayes, and has surprisingly not lost much playing time to the highly touted prospect Thomas Robinson. While an eventual loss of playing time to Robinson seems likely, (and logical because this team isn't going anywhere) as long as the mind numbing presence of Keith Smart is calling the shots for this club, Thompson should have no problem keeping up the production he has displayed so far. Owners would be wise to seek the talents of Thompson in favor of other under achieving players such as Ersan Ilyasova and Emeka Okafor and enjoy the likely top 100 production for the remainder of the season.

Brendan Haywood (C) Yahoo Ownership 8%

Now it's time for the real deep league veteran special, and who better to talk about then 13 season veteran centre Brendan Haywood. The 32 year old Tar Heel has been another model of mediocre consistency but in recent seasons his production has slipped beyond serviceable for even deep leaguers. After his 3 year tenure in Dallas ended (which was disastrous in both a basketball and fantasy perspective) deep league owners were intrigued with Haywood's signing with the lowly Charlotte Bobcats. Although for doubters it seemed as if Haywood did not have much gas left in the tank and would most likely continue to play in a reserve role, behind the likes of Bismack Biyombo and Byron Mullens.  Yet Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap has surprisingly decided to not move forward with the sophomore Biyombo and feels that Haywood provides the team with a better chance to win now. This decision has resulted in an Haywood starting and averaging 5 minutes more than his career average 23 mpg. With the extended court run, Haywood has averaged 7.2 ppg, 8.0 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, and 55.1 FG%, not spectacular numbers, but stats that can certainly be appreciated by deep league owners. Managers in shallow leagues and in need of a centre would be wise to acquire the services of Haywood as a short term investment (Bynum and Bogut owners im looking you), those in deeper leagues who are in need of rebounds and blocks would also be smart to go out and grab Haywood as a season long investment. Haywood is a low risk and medium reward commodity and owners should have no problem receiving solid defensive stats from the veteran centre.

Week 2: Half Court Offense

Hello everyone and welcome back to the second edition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! As you may know the rules of the article are quite simple, I recommend 5 players (one for each starting NBA position) and each of these players must be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues.

Before we begin with this weeks pickups, I would like to take the time and encourage all my readers to use the comments section of my blog and to ask ANY of your fantasy basketball related questions. I check the blog daily and will respond to anyone who needs help or advice on pickups and trades.

Now time for the fun stuff, lets take a look at who caught my eye this week.

Point Guard

A.J. Price (PG) Yahoo Ownership 7%

Who? Yes I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw Price's jersey leading the Wizards attack this week. A member of the Indiana Pacers for three years before being signed by the Washington Wizards this past offseason, A.J. Price did not see much of the court backing up the likes of Darren Collinson and George Hill, thus leaving him off many fantasy owners radars. Yet with a new change of scenery and a stress injury to the knee of franchise player John Wall, Price now finds himself quarterbacking an NBA offense. Although Wall is expected back by late November early December, Price can most certainly provide some fantasy usefulness with the limited time that he has leading the Wizards offense. After the first three games of the season, Price has shown fantasy owners that he can provide some help in assists (5.7 ast) and 3-pointers (2.3 3pt) while showing his backup pedigree with an ugly 30.6 field goal percentage. While the shooting percentage may not rise much higher, Price should be able to continue to produce solid assists and 3 point totals for fantasy owners, as long as he is manning the point for the Wizards offense. For deep league owners in a pinch for dimes and 3's consider Price a solid short term loan while Wall continues to rest his troublesome knee. Injuries like these can be tricky, and Price is one bad injury report away from being a short term loan to a season long investment.

Rodney Stuckey (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 34%

One of the more common mistakes made by fantasy managers is dropping proven players that have fallen into bad slumps early on in the season. Rodney Stuckey is definitely a proven player and has most certainly started off his season in a brutal slump. After beginning the year in a brutal 1 for 23 shooting slump, owners could not wait to kick Stuckey to the curb for a hot starting waiver wire player. Savvy managers would be wise to acquire the services of Stuckey now before his ownership level begins to rise, due to the inevitable return of the players pedigree. There is a reason Stuckey has finished inside the top 125 in fantasy the past three seasons, he drives to the basketball often, and shoots plenty of free throws. Although Stuckey may not get the respect calls from many NBA refs as the likes of Kobe and Lebron do, he still manages to score often and has averaged over 15 ppg over the past 3 seasons. Perhaps he may not provide the assists numbers he used to since sophmore Brandon Knight is now leading the point in Detroit, but Stuckey will continue to provide owners with solid scoring totals and great percentages, he's even expressed a desire to shoot more threes (something that had hindered his value greatly in the past seasons). His minutes are not legitimately threatened by anyone else on the roster (Detroit is one of the worst teams in the NBA) and he has supposedly recovered from a painful ear infection that was bothering him to start the season (and probably the reason for his poor start). Owners would be smart to pick up Stuckey in favour of names like Gerald Henderson and Courtney Lee, and expect top 120 fantasy value in return for their investment.

How long can Gee's fantasy value go overlooked? 

Small Forward

Alonzo Gee (SG,SF) Yahoo Ownership 12%

Perhaps its because he is a member of the Cavs, or maybe because he was never selected in an NBA draft, but Alonzo Gee can never seem to get the respect he deserves from fantasy owners. After having a semi breakout season last year and just finishing outside the top 100 in fantasy value, some believed that Gee would see his stock rise coming into the 2012-13 fantasy basketball season. Yet when the Cavs went out and signed C.J. Miles many owners panicked over the playing time of Gee and his ADP plummeted to 318 in fantasy drafts. Coming into the year even I wasn't sure how the playing time would pan out in Cleveland with their new free agent acquisitions and draft picks (Dion Waiters) but Gee has been able to carve himself a substantial amount of minutes. Due to his lockdown defense coach Byron Scott loves starting Gee in order for him to matchup with the opposing teams best players, this has allowed Gee to average over 31 mpg so far in the young season. With the minutes Gee is continuing to put up solid fantasy numbers, averaging over 10 points, 3 assists, and 1.8 steals. As Gee continues to separate himself from Miles due to his elite defense owners should no longer worry about the playing time of the 25 year old forward. So far Gee is averaging top 105 fantasy value, but as soon as his shooting percentage climbs back to his career normal (he's shooting only 39% from the field right now) I suspect Gee will crack the top 100 and his ownership level will begin to rise. Owners looking for a player that can provide solid defensive numbers from the forward position should look no further than Gee, and would be wise to drop players such as Tony Allen and Shawn Marion in favour of him. Think of Gee as a slightly less version of Kawhi Leanard this season, and enjoy the top 100 value from the young Cavalier.

The Mullens smooth touch can help fantasy owners

Byron Mullens (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 47%

There really isn't an excuse to be made, or a reason to be given as to why Mullens isn't owned in over half of yahoo leagues. Perhaps its because the Bobcats have only played three games and the big man has gotten off to a slow shooting start that owners have failed to recognize the services of Mullens. If I had to use one player to best describe Mullens game the obvious choice would be Ryan Anderson, both these guy just love to chuck up the three ball, something that is invaluable to owners at the power forward position. Last year it was not until late in the season that Mullens began to show owners what he was capable off, with the likes of Boris Diaw and Bismack Biyombo blocking his way. Yet when receiving starters minutes Mullens showed that he could be solid contributor averaging over 11 ppg (1.1 3 pointers), 7 rebounds, and just under 1 block per game. Coming into this year Mullens was a sleeper on many owners cheat sheets yet when Charlotte signed Brandon Haywood, some became concerned about wether Mullens would receive enough playing time to show off his skill set. Although Haywood is now starting, it is Biyombo that has fallen out of the starting lineup not Mullens, and the big man is averaging over 31 mpg over the past three contests. With Mullens now sliding over to the power forward spot and Haywood taking responsibilities for the opposing teams big man, Mullens has seen an uptick in defensive efficiency with an increase in both rebounds (8.4) and blocks (1.0). Along with the solid defensive numbers, Mullens is still chucking up those threes averaging an insane 8.0 three point attempts per game, a number that will definitely lower to around 5 or 6. Already putting up top 80 fantasy numbers, and averaging 15.3 points, there is no reason to think that this won't be Mullens break out season. Owners should jump onto the Mullens bandwagon now and enjoy the Channing Frye like stats from the Charlotte big man in favour of names such as Elton Brand and Kris Humphries.

Patrick Patterson (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 16%

Let's stick to the trend hear and take a look at another big man that seems to be chucking up the three ball. The story of Patrick Patterson is simple, he tore up his first two years in college but decided to come back and play for a national championship rather than leave when his stock was at an all time high, Tyler Hansbrough anyone? This decision hurt Patterson's  numbers in his junior year and dropped his stock a bit in the 2010 NBA draft (he still went 14th overall). In Patterson's junior year he showed off his NBA fantasy potential with a balanced stat line averaging 14.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and about 1 three pointer per game. After being drafted by the Rockets, Patterson proceeded to tear up the D-League  (averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds) and then was called up within 10 games by the Rockets. Unfortunately for the remainder of his rookie season and his entire sophomore season Patterson struggled to find playing time in a crowded Rockets frontcour, only receiving 6 starts within that span and averaging 23 minutes of playing time. Yet after the Rockets traded away Samuel Dalembert, and used their amnesty clause on Louis Scola this offseason, Patterson was the favourite to earn the starting power forward job for Houston. After missing the first game due to a quad injury, Patterson has now started the last three games and has averaged over 32 minutes of playing time, 13.0 points (1.0 three pointers), 6.0 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks. While the rebounding number looks low, and will probably not rise by that much due to the presence of rebounding god Omer Asik,  (i suspect he will average about 7.5 by years end) Patterson has still averaged top 100 value due to his ability to hit the three ball. Owners in a pinch for some cheap three pointers and scoring would be wise to acquire the services of Patterson in favour of low rebounding centres like Al Harrington and Emeka Okafor. At the ripe young age of twenty-three,  Patterson has both a world of talent and potential, and owners would be wise to tap into the young man's talents now before its too late, his ownership will rise fast.

Week 1: Let's Get the Ball Rolling!

Hello everyone and welcome to the first ever Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! The article will consist of a total of 5 recommended players, one for each starting NBA position. The rules of the article are that each player I recommend must have less than 50% ownership in Yahoo fantasy leagues.

Now that we have covered the ground rules, lets take a look at who has caught my eye this week.




Point Guard

Jarret Jack (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 36%

Owners looking for a point guard with a steady floor and high upside have no further to look than Jarret Jack. After being traded from the New Orleans Hornets to the Golden State Warriors many owners believed that Jack's value was strictly tied to the health of guard Stephan Curry, who looked to be starting the season with already reoccurring ankle issues. Although Jack's value may be hindered by the presence of Curry, the loss of Brandon Rush with a torn ACL, and Mark Jackson's deployment of a three guard offense has helped Jack already put up top 70 fantasy lines. Through the first three games of the season Jack has averaged 6.7 dimes and 29 mpg (a number that should grow with the loss of Rush)  and with Mark Jackson trusting him to run the point more often, there is no reason to think Jack's assist totals won't hold up for the remainder of the season. Savvy owners will be wise to snatch up Jack now and reep the already lucrative benifits, with the potential of that stock to skyrocket even greater.

Richard Hamilton (SG) Yahoo Ownership 18%

Sometimes the right fantasy play isn't always the sexy one, and many times owners choose to overlook veterans who are passed their primes for younger big boom fantasy players. Although Rip Hamilton isn't the 20 point scorer he once was, the 34 year old veteran has found himself again in a productive scoring role. With the absence of the Bulls franchise point guard Derrick Rose, and the departure of defensive specialist Ronnie Brewer, Chicago is now relying on their veteran shooting guard for some scoring to help ease the load off of stars Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah. Hamilton has responded very well and in the first two games of the young season, has put up back to back 19 point performances. Baring injury (which is a big 'if") Hamilton could easily find himself averaging around 14 ppg by the end of the season, a very useful number, especially for deep league owners. Expectations should wary due to Hamiltons lack of supporting numbers in the assists and rebound department, but owners should not feel hesitation to pick up the shooting guard in favour of younger over hyped fantasy commodities such as Gerald Henderson or Bradley Beal. Think of Rip as a poor man Jamal Crawford this season, and enjoy the respectable point output and high free throw percentage.

Al-Farouq Aminu (SF) Yahoo Ownership 39%

One of the best fantasy strategies is targeting the post hype sleepers, and Aminu is the absolout definition of that. After being selected to the all-freshman team in the ACC, Aminu was the 8th overall draft pick in the 2010 for the LA Clippers, but things didn't go according to plan. Aminu struggled to find his game the next season and was eventually traded to the New Orleans in the Chris Paul deal, but the change of scenery didn't help out Aminus numbers. Now back again in New Orleans for his third season Aminu has finally begun to tap into the potential that made him a top draft pick. Due to injuries to Eric Gordon and the departure of Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry, Aminu finds himself as the only capable small forward on the Hornets roster. This has finally given Aminu playing time, something he has lacked in his entire NBA career. Averaging 32 minutes the past three games Aminu has provided top 60 fantasy value with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Due to Aminu physical gifts and his ability to fill up the stat sheet, owners would be wise to pick up the post hype player in favour off names such as Trevor Ariza and Harrison Barnes. As long as Aminu is seeing over 30 mpg the sky is the limit for the young talented forward.

Power Forward

Tobias Harris (SF,PF) Yahoo Ownership 9%

Size, speed, skill, versatility, youth, potential, the list is endless to describe Tobbias Harris game. The 20 year old Tennessee product has awed scouts and coaches throughout his high school and college career and now has finally earned the opportunity to show his skills in the NBA. Although the sophomore is coached by one of the anti-christs for fantasy players in Scott Skiles, Harris has finally earned his way into a starting job with the Bucks. In his first career start this season, Harris rewarded his coach in 33 minutes of action, dropping 18 points (2 threes), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Due to the departure of Carlos Delfino and the injury concerns of veteran Mike Dunleavy, Harris's minutes are should be safe and with opposing teams focusing on super stars Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis, Harris will find himself with many open shots and lanes to use this season. Although Dunleavy exhibited the potential to affect Harris's stats in a negative fashion, owners would be wise to grab the young man now and realize that the long term youthful potential will surely overcome the veterans sporadic hot shooting nights.

Robin Lopez (C) Yahoo Ownership 31%

Yes, I can't even believe I am recommending two Hornets players in the same article, but numbers are numbers and they certainly do not lie. Lopez has found a way into the New Orleans starting lineup and has made the most of his opportunity putting up top 90 fantasy numbers the past three games. Averaging over 14 points and 2 blocks, Lopez has showed off some great hustle and smooth touch around the basket and is beginning to change his label as a career reserve centre. Although even with the great start owners should be careful of the obvious yet surprising roadblock that may end up hindering Lopez's solid potential, which is the amount of depth New Orleans has in the big men positions. Even though Lopez has averaged over 30 minutes to start the season, with the ongoing presence of super rookie Anthony Davis, 3 point ace Ryan Anderson, and pesky grinder Jason Smith, Robin may struggle to continue to find enough minutes that will allow him to put up serviceable fantasy numbers. Aside from the obvious minute concerns, owners would be wise to pick up Lopez now in favour veteran centres such as Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert, due to the top fantasy centre numbers he can provide.
